We believe that appreciating Mahjong begins with understanding its history. Mahjong originated in China, where it has been enjoyed for generations and remains an enduring part of the country's rich cultural heritage. Over time, the game has evolved around the world, giving rise to distinct variations, including American, Japanese (Riichi), Hong Kong, Taiwanese, and many others, each with its own unique rules, traditions, and communities. We believe that appreciating Mahjong begins with understanding its history.
While "mahj" has become a beloved shorthand among American players, it is not a translation of 麻將 (Májiàng) or a direct reflection of the Chinese language. The name Mahjong carries a cultural and linguistic history of its own, and we use "mahj" with appreciation for the communities and traditions that have shaped the game over generations. Friends text, "See you at mahj tonight," or ask, "Are we playing mahj this week?" It has become a familiar shorthand within modern American mahjong culture, a nickname that reflects the community, ritual, and joy surrounding the game.
